Whether your UK phone plan covers a ski trip, and what it costs, depends on your network, your plan and the country. France, Austria and Italy are in the EU, while Switzerland and Andorra are not. giffgaff, SMARTY and iD Mobile leave Switzerland out of their EU or Europe roaming zones, and Andorra is outside the Europe zone of the major networks we checked, so it can cost far more. A travel eSIM that covers every country your ski area touches is a simple way to avoid surprise charges.
Last checked: 15 October 2026. Roaming terms depend on your plan and when you joined, so check your own network's roaming page before you go.
UK roaming in the big ski countries
| Country | In the EU? | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| France | Yes | Your network's Europe roaming terms and any daily charge on your plan |
| Austria | Yes | Your network's Europe roaming terms and any daily charge on your plan |
| Italy | Yes | Your network's Europe roaming terms and any daily charge on your plan |
| Switzerland | No | Not in the EU or Europe roaming zones of giffgaff, SMARTY or iD Mobile. Other networks vary by plan, so check yours |
| Andorra | No | Not in the Europe zone of EE, O2, Tesco Mobile, giffgaff or SMARTY |
Sources: EE terms (which say Andorra is "not included in our European Roaming Zone"), O2 Europe roaming, Tesco Mobile, giffgaff, SMARTY and the iD Mobile community. Our Switzerland roaming guide has the network-by-network detail.
Andorra: the one to watch
Andorra's resorts, such as Grandvalira and Pal Arinsal, are popular with UK skiers, but Andorra is outside the EU and isn't covered by EU-style roaming deals. O2 puts it in a non-Europe zone (O2 data abroad), and EE charges it at non-standard rates. Using data on a normal UK plan there can be expensive, so check before you travel, keep data roaming off, and consider a local option.
Cross-border ski areas
Some of the Alps' best-known ski areas cross national borders. You can ski into another country without noticing, and so can your phone.
- Portes du Soleil (France and Switzerland): resorts such as Avoriaz, Morzine and Châtel link to Champéry and Morgins in Switzerland.
- Matterhorn ski area (Switzerland and Italy): Zermatt connects over the glacier to Breuil-Cervinia and Valtournenche.
- The Milky Way (France and Italy): Montgenèvre links to Sestriere and Sauze d'Oulx.
- Lakes and border valleys: resorts near Geneva and the Swiss, Italian and Austrian borders can pick up signals from across the border.
Ofcom warns that near a border "your phone might accidentally roam" onto a stronger signal from the other side (Ofcom). That matters if your network charges more for Switzerland or Andorra than for France or Italy. To stay in control:
- turn off automatic network selection and pick a network in the country you are staying in
- use a travel eSIM whose country list covers every country in your ski area
- check your roaming messages, which UK networks must send when you start roaming in a new country
Coverage on the slopes
Mobile coverage is generally good in resort villages, at lift stations and on the main pistes in the big Alpine resorts. It can be patchy in deep valleys, behind ridges, in tree runs and off-piste. Don't rely on mobile data for safety.
- Save the emergency number. 112 works across the EU and in Switzerland, free of charge (European Commission). Also save the local piste rescue number from your lift map.
- Download offline maps and the resort's app before you go up the mountain.
- Keep your phone warm. Cold drains batteries quickly. Keep it in an inside pocket and carry a small power bank.
- Check the avalanche bulletin every day if you go off-piste. The European Avalanche Warning Services links to the official national services.
Travel eSIM options for ski trips
SimplySIM prices on 15 October 2026:
| Plan | Covers | Data and validity | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Europe 10GB | France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland and more than 25 other countries (not Andorra) | 10GB, 30 days | £15.12 |
| France 10GB | France | 10GB, 30 days | £12.50 |
| Austria 10GB | Austria | 10GB, 30 days | £13.98 |
| Italy 10GB | Italy | 10GB, 30 days | £13.98 |
| Switzerland 10GB | Switzerland | 10GB, 30 days | £15.69 |
| Andorra 10GB | Andorra | 10GB, 30 days | £39.68 |
| Andorra Unlimited 7 Day | Andorra | Unlimited (1GB a day at full speed), 7 days | £28.50 |
For a cross-border area such as the Portes du Soleil or Zermatt-Cervinia, the Europe plan is the safer choice, because a single-country eSIM will not work on networks across the border. Andorra needs its own plan, as it is not part of our regional Europe plans. It is also more expensive, because Andorra has a single mobile operator.
How much data does a ski week use?
Many skiers use less than 1GB a day: maps, messaging, lift and weather apps, and photos uploaded in the evening on hotel Wi-Fi. Video calls, streaming and posting videos on the mountain use more. Our travel data calculator gives a personal estimate.
Setting up before you leave
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked with our compatibility checker.
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi. Don't try to scan a QR code in a snowy car park.
- When you arrive, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it.
- Leave your UK SIM on for calls and texts, but turn off its data roaming.
- Share live location with your group, so you can find each other at the end of the day.
Check the GOV.UK foreign travel advice for your destination, including insurance advice for winter sports, before you go.
Phone checklist for a ski holiday
- Check whether your network charges for each country your ski area touches, especially Switzerland and Andorra.
- Unlock your phone if it is tied to a UK network, before you leave.
- Install your travel eSIM at home and test that it appears in your settings.
- Download offline maps, the resort app and the lift map.
- Pack a power bank and a cable, and keep your phone in an inside pocket.
- Save 112 and the local piste rescue number in your contacts.
- Agree a meeting point with your group in case phones run out of battery.
FAQs
Is Andorra included in UK roaming?
Not on the major networks we checked. EE, O2, Tesco Mobile, giffgaff and SMARTY all leave Andorra out of their Europe zones, so roaming there can be expensive. Check your plan, or use an Andorra eSIM.
Will my phone roam into Switzerland when skiing from France?
It can. In cross-border areas such as the Portes du Soleil, your phone may connect to a Swiss network. If your network charges more for Switzerland, select a French network manually or use an eSIM that covers both countries.
Does a Europe eSIM work in Zermatt and Cervinia?
SimplySIM's Europe 10GB 30 Days plan covers both Switzerland and Italy, so it keeps working as you ski between Zermatt and Cervinia. Always check a plan's country list before you buy.
Is there mobile signal on the slopes?
In large resorts, coverage is usually good on main pistes and at lift stations, but it can drop in valleys, trees and off-piste terrain. Save 112 and the local piste rescue number, and don't depend on data for safety.
Can I use my phone as a hotspot in the chalet?
Yes. SimplySIM plans allow hotspot use, which is handy if chalet Wi-Fi is slow. Hotspot use counts towards your data, so choose a larger plan if several people will share it.
