Switzerland is not in the EU, so whether using your UK phone there counts as roaming, and what it costs, depends on your network and your plan. giffgaff, SMARTY and iD Mobile leave Switzerland out of their EU or Europe roaming zones, and other networks set their own terms, so check yours before you go. The UK and Switzerland have said they intend to scrap roaming surcharges, but nothing has changed yet.

Last checked: 15 October 2026. Roaming terms vary by plan and by when you joined, so always confirm on your network's own roaming page or app before you travel.

Why Switzerland is different

Switzerland is outside both the EU and the European Economic Area. When the UK was in the EU, "roam like at home" rules covered EU and EEA countries, and Switzerland was never part of them. Since 2021, UK networks set their own roaming zones. Some put Switzerland in their Europe zone and others leave it out, and the terms can differ between plans on the same network.

That catches people out on ski trips, rail tours and city breaks to Geneva, Zurich or Lucerne. It can also affect you without entering Switzerland, in border areas near Geneva, Basel or Lake Constance, where your phone may pick up a stronger Swiss signal (see below).

Even where a network treats Switzerland like the rest of Europe, your plan may have a daily roaming charge, a fair-use limit or a different rule for pay as you go. Your network must also send you a message explaining roaming charges when you arrive (unless you have opted out), under Ofcom rules.

The UK and Switzerland roaming deal: what is and isn't in force

On 13 July 2026 the UK and Switzerland concluded negotiations on an enhanced free trade agreement. In its conclusion summary, the UK government says:

  • the UK and Switzerland "intend to include surcharge-free international mobile roaming", along with related provisions such as capping wholesale rates, with safeguards for telecoms operators
  • the two countries "continue technical discussions to work through how this is best achieved"
  • the agreement will now move towards signature, followed by parliamentary scrutiny and ratification, and "entry into force will take place once both the UK and Switzerland have completed their ratification processes"

As of 15 October 2026, nothing on roaming is in force. The roaming element is an intention, not a finished rule. The Swiss government's SECO page says the agreement is expected to be signed before the end of 2026 and is not yet in force. We found no UK network that has announced it is dropping Swiss charges because of the deal. Until it takes effect, your network's current terms apply.

The same announcement mentioned a separate plan to let UK nationals use Swiss e-gates, which is not part of the roaming terms.

Roaming by accident near the Swiss border

Ofcom warns that near a border "your phone might accidentally roam" onto a stronger signal from the other side (Ofcom). Around Switzerland this matters in places such as:

  • the French towns around Geneva
  • ski areas that cross the border, such as the Portes du Soleil (France and Switzerland) and the Matterhorn ski area linking Zermatt and Cervinia (Switzerland and Italy)
  • Basel, where France, Germany and Switzerland meet
  • Lake Constance and Lake Geneva

If your network charges differently for Switzerland, turn off automatic network selection and choose a network in the country you are in, or use a travel eSIM that covers both countries.

Using a travel eSIM in Switzerland

If your network doesn't include Switzerland, or you want to avoid a daily charge, a travel eSIM gives you local data at a fixed price. On 15 October 2026, SimplySIM plans included:

PlanDataValidityPrice
Switzerland 10GB10GB30 days£15.69
Switzerland Unlimited 7 DayUnlimited (1GB a day at full speed)7 days£18.89
Europe 10GB (includes Switzerland, France, Italy, Germany and Austria)10GB30 days£15.12

The Europe plan is useful if you are crossing borders, for example skiing from Zermatt into Italy or staying in France and working in Geneva. The single-country Switzerland plans use Swiss networks including Sunrise and Salt. See all options on the Switzerland eSIM page.

A travel eSIM is data only. Keep your UK SIM on for calls and texts, turn off data roaming on it, and set the eSIM as your data line. Check your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked with our compatibility checker.

Tips to keep Swiss roaming costs down

  • Check your network's roaming page for Switzerland specifically, not just "Europe".
  • Set a spending cap. Ofcom says your provider must warn you as you approach it.
  • Use Wi-Fi in hotels, stations and trains where available.
  • Download offline maps and timetables before you travel.
  • Remember that 112 works for emergencies in Switzerland, as it does across Europe (European Commission).

FAQs

Does my UK plan cover Switzerland?

It depends on your network and plan. giffgaff, SMARTY and iD Mobile leave Switzerland out of their EU or Europe roaming zones. On other networks, check the roaming page for your plan, as daily charges and fair-use limits vary.

Has the UK-Switzerland roaming deal started?

No. Negotiations concluded on 13 July 2026, and both countries intend to include surcharge-free roaming, but the agreement is not yet signed and in force. Your network's current terms still apply.

Why does my network charge more in Switzerland than in France?

Switzerland is not in the EU or EEA, so some networks place it in a higher-priced zone. Check your network's roaming page for its exact rate.

Can my phone roam onto a Swiss network when I'm in France?

Yes. Near the border, your phone may connect to a stronger Swiss signal. If your network charges more for Switzerland, select a French network manually or use an eSIM that covers both countries.

Is a Europe eSIM valid in Switzerland?

Not always. Check that the plan's country list includes Switzerland. SimplySIM's Europe 10GB 30 Days plan does.
