On a Chinese SIM or Chinese Wi-Fi, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook and many other foreign services are blocked by the Great Firewall. A travel eSIM that routes your data outside mainland China, as roaming does, gives you a non-mainland internet address, so these apps generally work without a VPN, as long as you install the eSIM before you arrive.

Using Google and WhatsApp in China: the short answer
- On a Chinese SIM or hotel Wi-Fi: Google (Search, Maps, Gmail), WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, X and YouTube are blocked.
- On UK roaming or a roaming-style travel eSIM: your data leaves China through another country, so these apps normally work.
- No VPN needed for this, and we do not advise using one.
- Install before you travel. Setting up an eSIM inside China on blocked Wi-Fi can be difficult.
- Real-name rules: a Chinese SIM must be registered to your passport in person. A data-only travel eSIM bought in the UK gives you no Chinese number and needs no Chinese registration.
What the Great Firewall blocks
The Great Firewall is the informal name for the system China uses to filter internet traffic at its borders. It applies to all internet connections that go out through mainland Chinese networks, whether mobile data on a Chinese SIM or Wi-Fi in your hotel. Commonly blocked services include:
- Google Search, Gmail, Google Maps, Google Drive and YouTube;
- WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger and Threads;
- X (Twitter), many Western news sites, and some cloud storage services.
Many visitors find this out at the hotel, when Gmail will not load and WhatsApp messages sit with one tick. Chinese apps such as WeChat, Alipay, Amap and Baidu work normally.
Why a roaming-style eSIM avoids the block
When you roam abroad on a UK SIM, your data is usually carried back to your home network before it reaches the internet. Most travel eSIMs work the same way: you connect to a Chinese mobile network, but your data session is handed to a partner outside mainland China and reaches the internet from there. Because your traffic is not leaving through a mainland Chinese connection, the Great Firewall filtering does not apply in the same way, and apps see a foreign internet address.
This is how international roaming has always worked, not a workaround that we have added. It is widely relied on by business travellers, but it is not officially guaranteed and could change. Keep offline backups of anything important.
SimplySIM's two types of China eSIM
We sell two kinds of China plan, and the difference is which country your data comes out in. You may see the code "nonhkip" in some product addresses: it means the plan does not use a Hong Kong IP address.
| Plan type | Chinese network | Data exits via | Google, WhatsApp, Instagram | ChatGPT and TikTok |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard China plans | China Mobile 5G (unlimited plans also China Unicom and China Telecom) | Hong Kong | Normally work | Generally not, as neither is offered in Hong Kong |
| China mainland plans "supports TikTok, ChatGPT" (nonhkip) | China Unicom 5G, China Telecom 5G | Outside Hong Kong (for example Singapore) | Normally work | Normally work |
Why the difference matters: OpenAI does not offer ChatGPT in Hong Kong, and TikTok withdrew from Hong Kong in 2020. So on a plan that exits in Hong Kong, those two apps usually refuse to work, even though Google and WhatsApp are fine. If you rely on either, choose a "supports TikTok, ChatGPT" plan.

Install your eSIM before you enter China
Installing an eSIM needs an internet connection to download the profile. Inside China, hotel Wi-Fi may block or slow the servers involved, and you will not have Google to look up help. So:
- Install the eSIM in the UK on home Wi-Fi, a day or two before you fly. Leave it switched off until you land if your plan starts on first connection.
- Check your phone supports eSIM and is network unlocked on our device compatibility page.
- Set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it. Our dual SIM settings guide explains how.
- Download offline Google Maps or, better, Amap, plus offline translation packs, before you leave.
Real-name registration and Chinese phone numbers
China requires every Chinese mobile number to be registered to a real identity. As a visitor, that means buying a Chinese SIM in person at an operator shop with your passport. A Chinese SIM uses Chinese networks with Chinese internet routing, so the Great Firewall applies to it in full.
SimplySIM China eSIMs are data only and do not come with a Chinese number, so there is no Chinese real-name registration. The trade-off is that a few services want a Chinese number. Alipay and WeChat Pay now let visitors sign up with a foreign number and link a UK card, and DiDi accepts foreign numbers, but some restaurant, museum and ticket booking systems still ask for a Chinese one. Keep your UK SIM switched on for verification texts.
Why we do not recommend a VPN
You will see a lot of advice to install a VPN before visiting China. Only government-approved VPNs are legal in China, and enforcement against visitors using personal VPNs is rare but not impossible. A roaming-style eSIM gives you the same everyday access to Google and WhatsApp without that question, which is why we suggest it instead. Also be aware that phones can be checked at the border, so think about what you carry on them.
Checklist before you fly to China
- Check the entry rules. British citizens have been able to visit mainland China visa free for up to 30 days since 17 February 2026, under a scheme announced to run until 31 December 2026; check the latest on GOV.UK.
- Choose a "supports TikTok, ChatGPT" plan if you rely on either app.
- Install the eSIM in the UK and test that it appears in your settings.
- Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with your UK card before you go.
- Download offline maps and translation packs.
- Read our Great Wall of China guide if a day trip from Beijing is on your list.
FAQs
Does WhatsApp work in China with an eSIM?
On a travel eSIM that routes data outside mainland China, WhatsApp normally works, including calls. It does not work on Chinese hotel Wi-Fi or a Chinese SIM.
Do I need a VPN for Google in China?
Not on a roaming-style travel eSIM or UK roaming, because your data leaves China through another country. You would need one on Chinese Wi-Fi, which is why we suggest using your eSIM data instead.
What does "nonhkip" mean on a SimplySIM China plan?
It means the plan does not use a Hong Kong IP address. Those plans, shown as "supports TikTok, ChatGPT", exit outside Hong Kong, for example in Singapore, so ChatGPT and TikTok work as well as Google and WhatsApp.
Can I install a China eSIM after I arrive?
It is possible but risky, as Chinese Wi-Fi may block the download. Install it in the UK before you fly.
Will I get a Chinese phone number?
No. SimplySIM China eSIMs are data only. For a Chinese number you need a local SIM, registered with your passport, and it will be subject to the Great Firewall.
