For winter sun in Oman, a data eSIM is usually the cheapest way to stay online: SimplySIM's Oman 10GB 30Days plan costs £18.89, while most UK networks charge a daily roaming fee, up to £8 a day on Three. Coverage is good in Muscat, Nizwa, Sur and Khasab, patchy deep in Wahiba Sands and the Musandam fjords, and WhatsApp calls now generally work.

Last checked: 15 October 2026. Prices and rules change. Check your network's roaming page and the GOV.UK travel advice for Oman before you go.

Oman for winter sun: what to know first

From October to April, Oman offers warm, dry weather around seven hours from the UK, with mountains, desert and coastline in a single trip. Most visitors spend a few days in Muscat, then drive inland to Nizwa and the Hajar Mountains, out to Wahiba Sands for a night in a desert camp and along the coast to Sur and Ras al Jinz. Some add the Musandam peninsula in the far north for its fjords.

The FCDO's July 2026 update notes that Iranian strikes across the region since 8 July 2026 have included targets in Oman, and warns of possible flight disruption. It does not advise against travel to any named part of Oman. Sign up for FCDO email alerts and keep an eye on your airline's updates.

Omani mobile networks and coverage

Oman has three mobile networks: Omantel, Ooredoo Oman and Vodafone Oman, the newest of the three. They are regulated by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA). All three offer 4G and 5G in the cities.

Muscat and the coast

Muscat, including Mutrah, Qurum and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque area, has excellent 4G and 5G. Coverage is also good along the coast road to Sur and in Sur itself. The turtle reserve at Ras al Jinz usually has signal at the visitor centre.

Nizwa and the mountains

Nizwa and the main towns have strong 4G. On the drive up to Jebel Akhdar and Jebel Shams, coverage is generally good on the main roads but drops in wadis and on hiking trails, such as the Balcony Walk. Download offline maps before you head up.

Wahiba Sands

The towns on the edge of Wahiba Sands, also called Sharqiya Sands, have 4G, and many desert camps near the edge of the dunes pick up a signal. Deeper camps can have weak or no coverage. If you need to work or make calls, ask your camp about signal before you book, and treat the night as a chance to switch off.

Musandam

Khasab, the main town in Musandam, has good 4G, as does the main coast road. On dhow cruises into the fjords, the signal comes and goes behind the cliffs. Musandam is separated from the rest of Oman by the UAE, so if you drive there from Dubai or Muscat you will pass through UAE territory, where an Oman-only plan will not work. A Gulf plan that covers both countries avoids that.

VoIP and WhatsApp calls in Oman

Oman has historically restricted internet calling apps. In March 2020 the TRA lifted restrictions on several business apps, including Zoom, Google Meet and Skype. Since late 2024, users have widely reported that WhatsApp voice and video calls also work without any workaround. The TRA has not published a formal change of policy, so this could vary by network or change again.

In practice:

  • WhatsApp messages work as normal, and calls usually work too.
  • FaceTime reports are mixed. Have a backup such as a normal phone call or WhatsApp message if a call is important.
  • Do not use tools to get round any restriction that is in place. Oman's laws apply to visitors too.

What UK networks charge in Oman

Oman is outside every UK network's Europe roaming zone. These are the prices we found on official pages and price guides:

On Three, a 10-day trip costs £70 to £80 per phone, compared with £18.89 for 10GB on an eSIM. Official pages: EE, Three, O2 and Vodafone.

SimplySIM plans for Oman

SimplySIM's Oman plans run on Omantel, the largest Omani network. The Gulf plans use Vodafone Oman. Prices are in GBP as shown on 15 October 2026. Unlimited plans include 1GB a day at full speed, then continue at a reduced speed until the next day.

For most trips to Oman alone, the 10GB 30Days plan is the best value: it costs less than the 3GB and 5GB Oman plans. If you are combining Oman with Dubai or driving to Musandam through the UAE, a Gulf Cooperation Council plan covers both. Longer stays are covered by the Oman Unlimited 30Day plan (£85.26) and the Oman 50GB 30Days plan (£80.11).

How much data you need

A self-drive trip uses more data than a beach holiday, because you will rely on maps and navigation every day. For a 10-day road trip, 5GB to 10GB is enough for most people. If you plan to video call home every evening or share a hotspot with a travel companion, an unlimited plan is simpler. Our travel data calculator can help.

Setting up before you fly

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked with our device compatibility checker.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi and leave it off until you land in Muscat.
  3. On arrival, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for that line.
  4. Turn data roaming off on your UK SIM to avoid a daily charge. Keep it on for calls and texts if you need bank codes.
  5. Download offline maps for the mountains, Wahiba Sands and Musandam.

See our guide to dual SIM settings before you fly for step-by-step help.

What a travel eSIM does not do

A SimplySIM eSIM is data only and does not give you an Omani phone number. Car hire firms and desert camps may want a number to reach you; give them your UK number or WhatsApp. If you need a local number, you can buy an Omani SIM with your passport at the airport or a network shop.

FAQs

Do WhatsApp calls work in Oman?

Since late 2024, users have widely reported that WhatsApp voice and video calls work in Oman. The regulator has not published a formal policy change, so keep a backup option for important calls.

Is there mobile signal in Wahiba Sands?

There is 4G on the edge of the dunes and at many camps near the edge. Deeper in the dunes, coverage can be weak or missing.

Will my Oman eSIM work in Musandam?

Yes, Musandam is part of Oman and Khasab has good coverage. If you drive there through the UAE, an Oman-only plan will not work on the UAE stretch, so consider a Gulf plan.

How much does roaming in Oman cost on Three?

Three charges £8 a day for customers who joined from 18 December 2025, and £7 for most earlier plans.

Which SimplySIM plan is best for a week in Oman?

The Oman 10GB 30Days plan at £18.89 suits most travellers. Choose an unlimited plan if you stream or video call a lot.
