Morocco is not covered by the EU roaming deals that most UK networks include, so using your UK plan there usually costs £7.50 to £8 a day, and on some networks much more. A Morocco data eSIM from SimplySIM starts at £4.69 for 1GB, and a 7-day unlimited plan costs £24.29.

Last checked: 15 October 2026. Roaming prices and plans change, so check your network's own roaming page and the GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco before you go.

Why your UK plan gets expensive in Morocco

Most UK networks group Europe into a roaming zone where you can use your UK allowance, sometimes for a daily fee. Morocco is only 14km from Spain, but it is in Africa and outside those Europe zones. That puts it in each network's rest-of-the-world pricing, where daily passes cost more and pay-as-you-go data can be charged by the megabyte.

These are the prices we found on official network pages and price guides. They change regularly, and older plans can have different rates, so treat this as a guide and check your own network.

NetworkHow Morocco is treatedTypical cost
EERest of World Zone 3Roam Abroad Pass £7.50 for 24 hours with unlimited calls and texts but only 500MB of data (EE price guide, July 2025)
O2Not in O2 Travel or the Europe zoneNo daily pass. Data bundles or pay-as-you-go rates apply, which can run to several pounds per MB
VodafoneZone DAbout £8 a day, using your UK allowance
ThreeGo Roam Around the World Extra£8 a day if you joined from 18 December 2025, £7 for most plans from October 2021 to December 2025

Over a 10-night trip to Marrakech, a daily charge of £8 adds up to £80 per phone. For a couple, that is £160 before you have bought a single tagine. Check the official pages for EE, O2, Vodafone and Three, and our wider guide to UK roaming charges in 2026.

Moroccan mobile networks and coverage

Morocco has three mobile networks, all regulated by the Agence Nationale de Réglementation des Télécommunications (ANRT):

  • Maroc Telecom (IAM). The largest network, generally regarded as the strongest in rural areas, the High Atlas and the desert south.
  • Orange Maroc. Strong in cities and along the main tourist routes.
  • inwi. Good in cities, with lighter coverage in remote areas.

All three launched 5G in November 2025, starting in the major cities. Outside the cities you will mostly be on 4G.

Cities and the coast

Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca, Rabat, Tangier, Chefchaouen, Essaouira and Agadir all have good 4G, with 5G growing in the larger cities. Inside the old medinas, thick walls and narrow alleys can weaken the signal, so download an offline map of the medina before you start exploring.

The Atlas Mountains

Imlil, the Ourika Valley and the main roads over the Tizi n'Tichka pass usually have usable 4G or 3G. On trekking routes towards Toubkal and in deep valleys, expect long gaps with no signal at all. Tell someone your route and do not rely on your phone for navigation on the mountain.

The Sahara: Merzouga and Zagora

Merzouga, Zagora and Ouarzazate have mobile coverage in town. Once you head into the Erg Chebbi or Erg Chigaga dunes, the signal fades quickly. Many desert camps have some coverage at the edge of the dunes, but it is not guaranteed. Treat a night in the desert as a night offline and download what you need beforehand.

SimplySIM plans for Morocco

SimplySIM's Morocco plans run on the Orange Morocco network. Prices are in GBP as shown on 15 October 2026. Unlimited plans include 1GB a day at full speed, then continue at a reduced speed until the next day.

Combining Morocco with Spain or Europe

Plenty of UK travellers fly into Málaga or Seville and take the ferry from Tarifa or Algeciras to Tangier, or combine Morocco with a week in Spain or Portugal. For that kind of trip, a Europe and Morocco plan saves you buying two eSIMs.

We checked the country list of each Europe (40+ areas) and Morocco plan. All of them include Morocco along with Spain, Portugal, France and the rest of the EU, plus non-EU places such as Norway, Switzerland, Serbia, North Macedonia, Gibraltar, Jersey and the Isle of Man. Guernsey is not on the list.

A 20GB plan and a 30-day unlimited version are also available. If you are only visiting Morocco, the single-country plans above are cheaper.

How much data you need in Morocco

For a typical week of riads, souks and day trips, most people use 3GB to 5GB. Maps, ride-hailing apps, translation apps and WhatsApp use relatively little. Video calls, Instagram stories and uploading lots of video are what push you towards an unlimited plan. Our travel data calculator gives you a figure based on how you use your phone.

Before you go

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked with our device compatibility checker.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, and leave it off until you land.
  3. When you arrive, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that line only.
  4. Turn data roaming off on your UK SIM so it does not trigger a daily charge. You can keep it on for calls and texts if you need bank codes.
  5. Download offline maps for the medinas, the Atlas and the desert.

Our guide to dual SIM settings before you fly shows each step on iPhone and Android.

What a travel eSIM does not do

A SimplySIM eSIM is data only, so you will not get a Moroccan phone number. If a riad or guide wants to call you, give them your WhatsApp. If you need a local number for a longer stay, you can still buy a Moroccan SIM card in town with your passport.

FAQs

Is Morocco included in EU roaming on UK networks?

No. Morocco is outside the Europe roaming zones of EE, O2, Vodafone and Three. Expect a rest-of-the-world daily charge or pay-as-you-go rates.

Which network has the best coverage in the Atlas Mountains and the Sahara?

Maroc Telecom is generally seen as the strongest outside the cities. In the high mountains and deep in the dunes, no network gives reliable coverage, so plan to be offline at times.

Does Morocco have 5G?

Yes. Maroc Telecom, Orange and inwi launched 5G in November 2025, starting in the major cities. Most of the country still runs on 4G.

Can I use one eSIM for Spain and Morocco?

Yes. The Europe (40+ areas) and Morocco plans cover both countries, along with most of Europe, Jersey and the Isle of Man.

Will WhatsApp calls work in Morocco?

WhatsApp messages and calls generally work over mobile data in Morocco. Call quality depends on your signal, so use Wi-Fi for long video calls where you can.

Do I get a Moroccan number with a SimplySIM eSIM?

No. The eSIM is data only. Keep your UK SIM switched on for calls and texts, with its data roaming turned off.
