On both Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones you add a travel eSIM from the network settings, choose to add a SIM or mobile plan, and scan the QR code supplied with your order. Installation takes a few minutes over Wi-Fi and can normally be done before you fly, although when the plan validity starts depends on the plan, so check the plan page first. Once installed, set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line and turn data roaming off on your home line.

The steps below use the wording found on recent Samsung One UI and Pixel Android releases. Manufacturers rename these menus regularly, so if a label differs slightly, search the settings app for eSIM or SIM and you will find the same screen.

Before you start

  • Confirm your phone supports eSIM. Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer and Google Pixel 3 and newer generally do, but regional variants differ; check the device compatibility checker for your exact model.
  • Make sure the phone is not network-locked to a UK provider.
  • Connect to stable Wi-Fi. The profile is downloaded over the internet.
  • Have the QR code from your order email open on another screen, or save the image to the phone.
  • Update the phone software if an update is pending, then install the eSIM.

Installing on a Samsung Galaxy

  1. Open Settings and tap Connections.
  2. Tap SIM manager.
  3. Tap Add eSIM, then Scan QR code from service provider.
  4. Point the camera at the QR code and wait for the profile to download.
  5. Give the plan a recognisable name, such as the destination country, so you can tell your lines apart.
  6. When asked which line to use for calls, messages and mobile data, set calls and messages to your home line and mobile data to the new travel eSIM.

Installing on a Google Pixel

  1. Open Settings and tap Network and internet.
  2. Tap the + next to SIMs, or tap SIMs then Add SIM.
  3. Choose to download a SIM instead of using a physical one, then tap Next.
  4. Scan the QR code and allow the download to finish.
  5. Name the new SIM, then confirm it is turned on.
  6. Under SIMs, select the travel eSIM and set it as the preference for mobile data.

Settings to change before you travel

Getting these right is what stops an unexpected roaming bill on your home line and ensures the travel plan is actually the one being used.

  • Set mobile data to the travel eSIM.
  • Turn data roaming off on your home line.
  • Leave data roaming enabled on the travel eSIM if the plan instructions say to; many travel plans connect to partner networks and need it.
  • Keep calls and SMS on your home line so you still receive passcodes.
  • Turn off any automatic SIM switching for data.

Our dual-SIM settings guide goes through each of these in more detail, including the equivalent iPhone options.

What happens when you land

On arrival, switch off aeroplane mode and give the phone a couple of minutes to search for a local network. It may register on a partner operator with an unfamiliar name; that is normal for travel plans. If nothing appears, toggle aeroplane mode on and off once, then check that mobile data is set to the travel eSIM.

If you still have no data, work through the eSIM no-data checklist rather than deleting the profile. Deleting an eSIM is usually irreversible without help from support, so it should always be the last resort.

Managing several eSIMs

Android phones can store multiple eSIM profiles but only keep a limited number active at once, often one eSIM alongside a physical SIM. If you travel often, name each profile clearly and turn off the ones you are not using rather than deleting them. When a plan expires you can safely remove it to free a slot.

Ready to choose a plan? Search for your country on the SimplySIM homepage, or see the how it works page for the full purchase-to-activation process.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install the eSIM without the QR code?

Most Android phones offer a manual entry option where you type the activation details supplied with your order. Look for an option such as entering the details manually on the same screen where you would scan the code.

Does installing an eSIM delete my existing SIM?

No. The travel eSIM is added as an extra line alongside your physical SIM or existing eSIM. Your existing number, contacts and messages are unaffected.

What if my Samsung or Pixel has no Add eSIM option?

That usually means the model or regional variant does not support eSIM, or the phone is network-locked. Check your exact model on the compatibility checker and ask your provider about unlocking, or contact support before buying.
