You can use a travel eSIM to connect a laptop through your phone's hotspot when both the phone and the selected plan support tethering. The laptop uses the phone's mobile data allowance. Check hotspot limits, fair-use terms and coverage before choosing a plan for work or a longer trip.
What to check before you buy
Start with the plans for your destination. Read the individual product details for supported networks, validity and hotspot conditions. An unlimited data label does not necessarily mean unlimited full-speed laptop use. If a requirement is unclear, ask SimplySIM before purchasing.
Your phone must support the eSIM and be unlocked for another provider. The laptop normally connects to the phone over Wi-Fi, so it does not need its own eSIM for that arrangement. Check the phone compatibility guidance first.
How to connect the laptop
- Install the eSIM using the instructions supplied with the plan and check its activation policy.
- In a supported destination, select the travel eSIM for mobile data. Apply the roaming settings specified in the plan instructions.
- Confirm that the phone can open a web page using mobile data with Wi-Fi disconnected.
- Enable the phone's personal hotspot or Wi-Fi hotspot and set a strong password.
- On the laptop, choose that hotspot from the Wi-Fi list and enter the password.
- Open a small web page before starting downloads or a meeting, then switch the hotspot off when finished.
Menu names vary by device and software version. Follow Apple's Personal Hotspot instructions for an iPhone, or Google's hotspot guidance for a Pixel. Other Android manufacturers may use different menus.
Why laptop data can run out quickly
A laptop may download software updates, synchronise cloud folders or upload photos in the background. Video meetings and high-resolution streaming add further demand. Review those settings before connecting and pause non-essential transfers where your work policy allows.

If the hotspot connects but the internet does not
First check whether mobile data works on the phone itself. If it does not, check coverage, remaining allowance, validity and the mobile-data line. Follow the supplied network instructions before changing APN settings. If the phone has data but the laptop does not, check that tethering is supported, confirm the hotspot password and reconnect the laptop.

Can a hotspot replace office internet?
It can be useful for travel access, but speed and reliability depend on local coverage, congestion, the device and plan conditions. For important work, test the connection and prepare an alternative. Follow your organisation's device and VPN policies, and consider battery use during long sessions.
