Spain is in the EU roaming zone of every major UK network, but many plans now charge a daily fee to use your allowance there, and the cheapest e sim for Spain is often less than a few days of that fee. SimplySIM's Spain eSIM starts at £2.62 for 1GB, 5GB for 30 days costs £7.39, and Spain eSIM unlimited data costs £14.99 for 7 days. The same plans work in the Canary Islands and the Balearics.

Last checked: 27 October 2026. Roaming prices change, often every April, so check your own network's roaming page before you go, along with the GOV.UK travel advice for Spain.

What UK networks charge in Spain in 2026

Since Brexit, UK networks set their own rules for Europe. Some still include Spain at no extra cost, and others add a daily charge to use your UK allowance. The table shows what we found on each network's official pages on 27 October 2026. Your plan may differ, especially if you joined or upgraded a long time ago.

EEPay as you go: Roam like Home £2.50 for 24 hours or £10 for 7 days. Most pay monthly plans taken from 7 July 2021 also have a daily charge, but we could not confirm the current pay monthly rate on EE's siteEE roaming help

VodafoneSpain is in Zone B. Pay monthly plans without European roaming can add an 8-day pass for £16 or a 15-day pass for £21. Some plans, such as Xtra Global Roam, include itVodafone roaming
ThreeGo Roam in Europe: £2 a day if you joined between 1 October 2021 and 17 December 2025, £2.75 a day if you joined from 18 December 2025. Some Your Way Value and Complete plans include roamingThree Go Roam

A daily fee looks small, but it is charged per phone, per day. Two weeks in Spain at £2.75 a day is £38.50 for one phone, or £154 for a family of four. Fair use caps matter too: if you use your phone as a hotspot for a laptop, 5GB can run out quickly. Our guide to UK roaming charges in 2026 covers every network in more detail.

Spanish mobile networks

Spain has four main mobile groups, regulated by the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC):

  • Movistar. Owned by Telefónica, the former national operator, and generally regarded as having the widest coverage. For independent test results, see Opensignal's latest reports.
  • MasOrange. Formed by the 2024 merger of Orange Spain and MásMóvil. It runs the Orange and Yoigo networks.
  • Vodafone Spain. Now owned by Zegona but still trading as Vodafone, with national 4G and growing 5G.
  • Digi. The fastest-growing challenger, which uses Movistar's network where its own masts do not yet reach.

SimplySIM's fixed-data Spain plans connect to Orange and Movistar, with 5G where available. The unlimited Spain plans can also use Vodafone and Yoigo. Having more than one network matters most in rural areas, because the phone can switch to whichever has the stronger signal.

Coverage in the Canary Islands, Balearics and rural Spain

Canary Islands

Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura have good 4G and 5G in the resorts and towns, from Playa de las Américas to Puerto del Carmen and Corralejo. Signal drops in the high interior, such as parts of Teide National Park, the mountain roads of Gran Canaria and the north of La Gomera and La Palma. The Canary Islands are part of Spain and the EU, so they count as Spain for an esim Canary Islands trip and for UK networks' Europe roaming.

Balearic Islands

Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza have strong coverage in Palma, the resorts and the main towns. Expect weaker signal in the Serra de Tramuntana in Mallorca, on some coves reached by boat, and on quieter parts of Formentera. An esim for the Balearics is the same Spain plan: there is nothing extra to buy.

Mainland and rural Spain

Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Valencia, Málaga and the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and Costa Brava are well covered. Coverage is thinner in sparsely populated inland areas, such as parts of Teruel, Soria and Extremadura, and in mountain ranges like the Pyrenees and the Picos de Europa. If you are driving, download offline maps before you leave the coast.

Winter sun in the Canaries

From November to March, the Canary Islands are the most popular winter sun choice for UK travellers within a short-haul flight. They share UK time, so there is no jet lag, and they stay mild when the rest of Europe is cold. Our sun-seeker's guide compares the islands with other winter sun spots.

Longer winter stays are where roaming fees and fair use caps start to bite. Most UK networks also have fair use rules for long periods abroad. For a month or more, the Spain 50GB 180Days plan (£24.99) or the Spain Unlimited 30Day plan (£43.89) is simpler. See our guide to long-stay eSIM plans if you are spending the winter abroad.

EES border checks in Spain

Spain is in the Schengen area, so UK passport holders go through the EU's Entry/Exit System (EES) when they arrive. EES has been fully operational since 10 April 2026: on your first entry you register fingerprints and a photo at the border. ETIAS, the online travel authorisation, is expected to start in the last quarter of 2026, but the European Commission had not announced a date when we checked. Our EES and ETIAS guide for UK travellers explains both, including the 90-day rule.

Spain plan or Europe plan?

If you are only visiting Spain, a Spain plan is usually the best value. If your trip takes in Portugal or other European countries as well, a Europe plan saves you buying a second eSIM. Plans that covered Spain on 27 October 2026 included:

PlanDataValid forPrice
Europe (33 areas) 5GB 30Days5GB30 days£7.69
Europe (33 areas) 10GB 30Days10GB30 days£12.99
Europe Unlimited 7DayUnlimited7 days£17.99
Europe (40+ areas) & Morocco 5GB 30Days5GB30 days£12.49

The Europe and Morocco plan suits a trip that crosses from Tarifa or Algeciras to Tangier. Check the country list on each product page before you buy, as regional plans differ. Our guide to Europe regional eSIMs versus single-country plans goes through the choice, and all regional plans are on our regional and global eSIMs page.

Before you go

  1. Check your phone supports eSIM and is network-unlocked with our device compatibility checker.
  2. Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi before you fly, and leave it off until you land.
  3. When you arrive, choose the travel eSIM for mobile data and turn data roaming on for that line only.
  4. Turn data roaming off on your UK SIM so it does not trigger a daily charge. Keep the UK line on for calls and texts, such as bank security codes.

A SimplySIM eSIM is data only, so you will not get a Spanish phone number. WhatsApp, FaceTime and other apps work over the eSIM's data as normal.

FAQs

Do I need an eSIM for Spain if my UK network includes EU roaming?

Not always. If your plan includes Spain at no extra cost and its fair use cap covers your trip, your UK plan may be enough. A Spain eSIM is worth it if your network charges a daily fee, if you have a low roaming data cap, or if you are staying a long time.

What is the best eSIM for Spain with unlimited data?

SimplySIM's Spain Unlimited plans run from 7 to 60 days, starting at £14.99 for 7 days. They include 1GB a day at full speed, then continue at a reduced speed, and can connect to Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo.

Does a Spain eSIM work in the Canary Islands and Balearics?

Yes. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Mallorca, Ibiza and the other islands are part of Spain, so a Spain plan covers them. Coverage is strong in resorts and towns and weaker in the mountains.

How much does EE charge for roaming in Spain?

EE pay as you go customers pay £2.50 for 24 hours or £10 for 7 days with Roam like Home. Most EE pay monthly plans taken from 7 July 2021 also have a daily charge. Text ROAM to 150 or check EE's roaming page for your plan.

Can I use one eSIM for Spain and Portugal?

Yes, with a Europe plan. The Europe (33 areas) plans cover both, along with many other European countries. Check the country list on the product page.

Will I get a Spanish phone number?

No. SimplySIM eSIMs are data only. Keep your UK SIM on for calls and texts, with its data roaming turned off.
