Whether you ask Google, ChatGPT or a friend who travels a lot, the same eSIM questions come up again and again. Here are the twelve most common ones, answered simply and honestly.

1. Will my phone work with an eSIM?

Most phones released since 2018 support eSIM, including iPhone XS and newer, Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer, and Google Pixel 3 and newer. Your phone must also be unlocked from your network. Check yours in seconds on the device compatibility checker.

2. Do I keep my phone number and WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp is linked to your account, not your SIM, so it works exactly as before. Your UK SIM stays in the phone alongside the eSIM, so your number does not change.

3. Can I still receive calls and texts abroad?

Yes. Travel eSIMs are data-only, but with dual SIM your normal SIM stays active for calls and texts (standard roaming rates apply to those), while the eSIM handles all your data at local prices. Bank verification texts still arrive as normal.

4. Is an eSIM cheaper than roaming?

Almost always. UK networks charge £2 to £6 per day to roam in many destinations - up to £84 for a fortnight. A SimplySim plan for the same trip can cost from £1.48 total. See the full comparison against EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 on the network cost comparison page.

5. When should I buy and install my eSIM?

A day or two before you fly is ideal. Install it at home on WiFi, and it will sit dormant until you arrive.

  • Buy online, QR code arrives by email in minutes
  • Install before departure in under 5 minutes
  • Data switches on automatically when you land

6. Does the clock start ticking when I install it?

No. SimplySim eSIMs only activate when they first connect to a network in your destination country, so installing early costs you nothing.

7. Do I need internet to install an eSIM?

Yes, you need WiFi or mobile data for the one-off installation - which is exactly why we recommend installing at home before you travel rather than hunting for airport WiFi.

8. Can I use my phone as a hotspot?

With SimplySim, yes - tethering is allowed on our plans, so laptops, tablets and travel companions can share your data. Watch out elsewhere: some providers cap hotspot use at around 500MB per day.

9. What happens if I run out of data?

You top up the same eSIM in a couple of clicks from your dashboard - no new eSIM, no reinstalling, no new QR code. Or choose an unlimited plan and never think about it.

10. Does one eSIM work in multiple countries?

Yes, if you buy a regional or global plan. Our Europe plan covers 35 areas on one eSIM, and global plans cover 118+ countries, switching networks automatically at each border. See regional and global eSIMs.

11. Are eSIMs safe?

Safer than plastic SIMs in most ways: an eSIM cannot be pulled out of a stolen phone, cloned from a physical chip or lost down the back of a seat. Using your own data connection is also more secure than public airport or cafe WiFi.

12. Can I reuse my eSIM on the next trip?

With SimplySim you can keep the eSIM installed and simply top it up with a new plan next time you travel to a covered destination - no need to reinstall anything.

Final Thoughts

Most eSIM worries disappear once you know the basics: your number stays, WhatsApp works, the plan only starts when you land, and topping up takes seconds. Check your phone on the compatibility checker and browse plans on the SimplySim Deals Page.
