Yes. The iPhone Duo is eSIM only: there is no SIM card tray, and Apple says it is "eSIM-only worldwide", so UK models are no different from US ones. You will need an eSIM from your UK network for your number, and when you travel you add a travel eSIM alongside it instead of buying a local SIM card.

Last checked: 27 October 2026. Apple and the UK networks update their eSIM pages often, so check the official links below before you buy or switch.

Is the iPhone Duo eSIM only?

Apple's foldable iPhone has no physical SIM slot in any market. Apple's UK iPhone Duo specifications say it is "not compatible with physical SIM cards" and that it "is activated with an eSIM and does not support a physical SIM". The UK iPhone Duo page goes further and says it is "eSIM-only worldwide". Apple's SIM type list puts the iPhone Duo in the eSIM-only group alongside the iPhone Air.

QuestionAnswer (from Apple UK, 27 October 2026)
Does the iPhone Duo have a SIM tray? No. eSIM only, in every country
How many eSIMs can be active? Two at the same time (dual eSIM)
How many eSIMs can it store?Eight or more

UK price (SIM-free)From £1,999 (256GB). £2,199 (512GB), £2,599 (1TB), £3,199 (2TB) on the Apple Store

This is a bigger change for UK buyers than the iPhone 17 range. UK iPhone 17 and iPhone 18 Pro models still have a nano-SIM slot, and only versions bought in the US, Canada, Japan and a few other countries are eSIM-only. The iPhone Air and iPhone Duo are the two iPhones with no tray anywhere. It is part of the wider move to eSIM-only phones and networks, and we keep a running list of eSIM-only phones.

Do other regions differ?

Not on the SIM tray. Apple says the Duo is eSIM-only worldwide. Apple's SIM type list notes that in China mainland only certain models support eSIM, and the iPhone Duo is one of them. Chinese press coverage says mainland buyers have to activate their eSIM in person at a network branch, but Apple has not published those steps in English, so treat that as reported rather than confirmed.

What eSIM only means in practice

  • No swapping SIM cards. You can't pop your SIM out of an old phone and into the Duo. Your number moves as an eSIM, either by Quick Transfer or by asking your network for a new eSIM.
  • No local SIM cards abroad. A SIM card from an airport kiosk will not fit. You use a travel eSIM instead.
  • Two lines at once. You can keep your UK number on one eSIM and use a second eSIM, such as a travel data plan, at the same time. Apple's dual SIM guide explains how the two lines work.
  • Your network must support eSIM. Apple's footnote says using an eSIM "requires a network provider that supports eSIM". Most big UK networks do, but some smaller ones are still limited (see the table below).
  • The phone must be unlocked for a travel eSIM. iPhones bought from Apple are unlocked. If you bought yours on a contract, check Settings, General, About shows No SIM Restrictions.

If eSIMs are new to you, our guide to what an eSIM is and how it works covers the basics.

Moving your number from a physical SIM phone

Most people buying an iPhone Duo will be coming from a phone with a SIM card. How you move your number depends on what you are coming from.

From an older iPhone

eSIM Quick Transfer can move your plan from your old iPhone to the Duo, including converting a physical SIM, as long as your network supports it. Apple's Quick Transfer guide lists what you need:

  • both iPhones on iOS 18.4 or later and signed in to the same Apple Account
  • the old iPhone unlocked with its passcode, with Bluetooth on and close by
  • a network that supports Quick Transfer

During setup, follow the prompts to transfer your mobile plan. After setup, go to Settings, then Mobile Service, then Set Up Mobile Service or Add eSIM, and choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone. Once the plan is active on the Duo, the SIM in your old phone stops working. Apple's network list names 3, EE, O2, Sky Mobile and Vodafone for Quick Transfer in the UK.

From an Android phone

Apple supports moving an eSIM from Android to iPhone with iOS 26 or later and Android 16 or later, but only on supported networks. Apple's Android transfer page lists EE as the only UK network so far. Otherwise, ask your network for a new eSIM for the Duo.

If Quick Transfer isn't offered

Ask your network for a replacement eSIM, usually through its app, website or a shop. You will get a QR code or an in-app install. Our guide to moving your eSIM to a new iPhone walks through each step, and how to set up an eSIM on different devices covers QR codes and manual entry.

Do UK networks support the iPhone Duo eSIM?

Most do. This is a short summary: for full network-by-network detail, see our UK networks eSIM support guide.

EEYesQuick Transfer, or the EE app (EE help)
O2Yes, Pay Monthly and Pay As You GoQuick Transfer, My O2 or a store (O2 help)
VodafoneYesQuick Transfer, or ask Vodafone for a new eSIM (Vodafone help)
ThreeYes, Pay Monthly and Pay As You GoQuick Transfer, or Replace SIM in the Three app or My3 (Three help)
Sky MobileYesQuick Transfer (listed by Apple), or a new eSIM from your Sky account
Tesco MobileYesNew eSIM, then text SWAP to 23424 (Tesco Mobile help)
giffgaffYesgiffgaff app: Account, SIM, Replace my SIM (giffgaff help)
SMARTYYesRequest a replacement SIM and choose eSIM (SMARTY help)
iD MobileYesReplacement eSIM in the iD app or at my.idmobile.co.uk (iD Mobile eSIM)
VOXIYesSettings, Manage my SIM (VOXI help)
LebaraLimitedLebara's help pages say eSIM for new customers is only offered with the iPhone Air so far. We could not confirm iPhone Duo support, so ask Lebara before you buy

If you are on a smaller network, check eSIM support before you order the phone, because without it you won't be able to use your number on the Duo at all.

Travelling with an eSIM-only iPhone

The old trick of buying a local SIM card on arrival doesn't work on the Duo. The good news is that a travel eSIM is easier: you install it at home and it sits alongside your UK line.

  1. Check the phone is unlocked. Our compatibility checker lists the Apple iPhone Duo as eSIM compatible.
  2. Install the travel eSIM before you fly, on Wi-Fi at home. Our guide on when to install a travel eSIM before your flight explains the timing.
  3. When you land, set the travel eSIM as your mobile data line, turn on data roaming for it and turn off data roaming on your UK line. Our dual SIM settings guide has every setting.

With iOS 26 and later, iPhones can show a Turn On Travel eSIM prompt when you arrive. You can choose Travel eSIM Only, or Travel eSIM and Current eSIM. Apple notes that if you keep both lines on, you may still pay roaming charges on your home line (Apple travel eSIM guide).

Travel eSIMs are data only, so keep your UK eSIM on for calls and texts. iMessage, FaceTime and WhatsApp keep working with your UK number over the travel data. See how to keep your WhatsApp UK number with a travel eSIM.

What to do if you lose or reset your iPhone Duo

With no SIM card to pull out, losing the phone or wiping it needs a little more care.

  • Lost or stolen: Apple's lost iPhone guide says to use Find My to mark it as lost, report it to the police and contact your network to report it and disable your account. Your network can then send a new eSIM to your replacement phone.
  • Erasing or trading in: when you erase an iPhone, Apple asks whether to Keep eSIM and Erase Data or Delete eSIM and Erase Data (Apple). Apple says that if you erase your eSIM, you will need to contact your network to reactivate your plan. Only delete it once your number is working on your next phone.
  • Travel eSIMs: a travel eSIM can normally be installed only once. Don't delete one you still need. If you have a problem with a SimplySIM eSIM, contact us before removing it.

FAQs

Does the iPhone Duo have a SIM tray?

No. The iPhone Duo has no SIM card tray in any country. Apple says it is eSIM-only worldwide and is not compatible with physical SIM cards.

Is the UK iPhone Duo eSIM only?

Yes. Unlike the UK iPhone 17 range, which keeps a nano-SIM slot, the UK iPhone Duo is eSIM only. You will need an eSIM from your UK network to use your number.

How many eSIMs can the iPhone Duo hold?

Apple says the iPhone Duo stores eight or more eSIMs and can have two active at once. Only one line uses mobile data at a time, and you choose which.

Can I use a local SIM card abroad with an iPhone Duo?

No, a physical SIM card won't fit. Use a travel eSIM instead. You can install it before you fly and keep your UK eSIM on for calls and texts.

Can I move my number from a SIM card to the iPhone Duo?

Yes. If your old iPhone and your network support eSIM Quick Transfer, you can move your number during setup. Otherwise ask your network for a new eSIM through its app, website or a shop.

Which UK networks support the iPhone Duo?

Any network that supports eSIM on iPhone should work, including EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, Sky Mobile, Tesco Mobile, giffgaff, SMARTY, iD Mobile and VOXI. Lebara's eSIM support is still limited, so check with them first.
